Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French gazomètre.
Etymology: < French gazomètre (1789 in the passage translated in quot. 1790 at sense 1; < gaz gas n.1 + -omètre -ometer comb. form), later remodelled after gas n.1 (compare form variation at that entry). Compare gasometry n.
1. Chemistry. A piece of laboratory apparatus for holding and measuring gas. Now chiefly historical.
