Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin Geticus , -al suffix1.
Etymology: < classical Latin Geticus (see Getic adj.) + -al suffix1. Compare later Getic adj.Ovid describes the Getae as fierce and barbaric (e.g. Epistulae ex Ponto 1. 5. 66, 2. 7. 31). In the 16th century their ingratitude was considered proverbial: the source of quot. 15652 and a Latin source of 1564 (P. Rebuffi Tractatus de Decimis) quote different versions of the following proverb: superat enim ingratos Getas ‘for he overcomes the ungrateful Getans’.
Obsolete.
Characteristic of or resembling the Getae (see Getan n.) (in quots. used of ingratitude and lying). H. Cockeram Eng. Dict. (1623) defines the word as ‘vile, wicked’.
