Origin: A borrowing from Italian. Etymon: Italian montepulciano.
Etymology: < Italian montepulciano (17th cent.) < Montepulciano, the name of a town in southern Tuscany, Italy, where the wine is made. O.E.D. Suppl. (1976) gives the non-naturalized pronunciation (mǫntepultʃyā·no) /montepulˈtʃano/.
1. A full-bodied red wine produced in Montepulciano from the Sangiovese grape. Formerly also: †a white wine from the Montepulciano area (see quot. 1798) (obsolete).
