Stress is usually determined by a subsequent element and vowels may be reduced accordingly. Some degree of stress is always maintained on the first syllable. If the subsequent element is an existing word, it is likely to retain its original stress pattern, e.g. fulvo-cinnamomeus Brit. /ˌfʌlvə(ʊ)sɪnəˈməʊmɪəs/, /ˌfʊlvə(ʊ)sɪnəˈməʊmɪəs/, U.S. /ˌfʊlvoʊˌsɪnəˈmoʊmiəs/, /ˌfəlvoʊˌsɪnəˈmoʊmiəs/.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin fulvo-.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin and scientific Latin fulvo- (formations in which are found from at least the second half of the 18th cent., e.g. fulvo-rufus (1763 or earlier), fulvo-pubescens (1776 or earlier)), combining form of classical Latin fulvus (see fulvous adj.); compare -o- connective.Found in a small number of formations, exemplified below. Combining with second elements ultimately of Latin origin.
Chiefly Zoology and Botany (now rare).
Forming adjectives with the sense ‘fulvous and——’.
