Etymology: < Hellenistic Greek ῥοδαλός made of or from roses ( < ancient Greek ῥόδον rose (see rhodo- comb. form) + -αλος , suffix forming nouns) + -ite suffix¹, so called on account of its appearance (see quot. 1836).

Mineralogy. Now rare.

A soft, rose-coloured or blood red clay mineral originally found in Northern Ireland. Rhodalite is an alumosilicate of iron (whose precise proportions have not been defined) which also contains some calcium and traces of manganese, occurring in the form of small rectangular prisms.
