Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly formed within English, by derivation. Partly a borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Partly formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: fosse n.1; Latin fossa , -iform comb. form; fossa n.1, -iform comb. form.
Etymology: Partly < fosse n.1 or its etymon classical Latin fossa (see fossa n.1) + -iform comb. form, and partly (in zoological use) < fossa n.1 + -iform comb. form. N.E.D. (1897) gives the pronunciation as (fǫ·sifǭɹm) /ˈfɒsɪfɔːm/.
Obsolete. rare.
Having the form of a trench, furrow, or (Zoology) fossa.
