Etymology: As noun < Anglo-Norman and Law French affermant, Law French affirmant (end of the 13th cent. or earlier), use as noun of present participle of affermer , affirmer affirm v. As adjective < classical Latin affirmant-, affirmāns, present participle of affirmāre affirm v. Compare -ant suffix1. Compare earlier affirmer n., and also earlier affirmance n.
