Origin: Apparently a borrowing from Spanish. Etymon: Spanish Angeleño.
Etymology: Apparently < American Spanish Angeleño (not dated in dictionaries of Spanish) < Angel- (in the name of the city of Los Angeles , California: see below) + -eño , suffix forming nouns and adjectives from place names. Compare Angelena n. and Los Angeleno n. and adj.Los Angeles was founded in 1781 as the village of La Reyna de los Angeles ; it was so named after its patron, Our Lady the Queen of Angels of the Porciúncula River (Spanish Nuestra Señora la Reina de los Angeles de Porciúncula ). Specific forms. The form Angelino shows remodelling after Spanish words in -ino, e.g. camino way, road (see camino real n.).
