Origin: A borrowing from Italian. Etymon: Italian foglietto.
Etymology: < Italian foglietto small sheet of paper (15th cent.), bulletin, fascicle (1690) < foglio sheet of paper (see folio n.) + -etto -et suffix1. N.E.D. (1897) gives the non-naturalized pronunciation as (folye·tto) /foʎˈɹetto/.
Music. Obsolete.
The written part for the first violin in an orchestra, which contains some of the information given on a full score.Apparently only in dictionaries and glossarial sources.

1841 J. F. Warner Universal Dict. Musical Terms p. xli/1 in tr. G. Weber Gen. Music Teacher Foglietto, this term, which literally means, a small sheet of paper, is used by the Italians to designate that first-violin part in which are written together all the obligate passages of the other instruments.
1876 J. Stainer & W. A. Barrett Dict. Musical Terms 173/2 Foglietto, a first violin part; the leader's part, which contains cues, &c., used by a conductor in the absence of a full score.
1918 L. C. Elson et al. Mod. Music & Musicians III. 546/2 Foglietto, The part used by the leader of the violins in the orchestra, containing cues, etc., of the other instruments, sometimes used by the conductor in place of a score.
