Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin fōcilāt-, fōcilāre, fōculāre.
Etymology: < classical Latin fōcilāt-, past participial stem (see -ate suffix3) of fōcilāre, earlier fōculāre to revive or keep alive, to cherish < fōculum device for warming or keeping warm < fōvēre to keep warm (see fovent adj.) + -culum -culum suffix. Compare focillation n.The later classical Latin form fōcilāre is frequently attested, and the analogical form fōcillāre is widespread in manuscripts, although not found on any ancient manuscript or inscription.
Obsolete.
