Etymology: < scientific Latin Mermithidae, family name (C. F. W. Claus Grundzüge der Zool. (ed. 4) (1880) I. 433) < Mermith- , taken as stem of Mermis , genus name (F. Dujardin 1842, in Ann. des Sci. Nat.: Zool. 18 133; < ancient Greek μέρμιθ- , μέρμις cord, of uncertain origin) + -idae (see -id suffix³). Compare German Mermithiden, plural (1880, Claus), French mermithides, plural (1884, in a translation of Claus).
