Origin: A borrowing from Greek. Etymon: Greek μερο-.
Etymology: < Hellenistic Greek μερο-, combining form (in e.g. μεράρχης distributing official of a deme, commander of a division, and Byzantine Greek μεροποιός (adjective) creating parts) of ancient Greek μέρος a part, cognate with μείρεσθαι to receive a part of, μόρος destiny (conceived as being handed out as a share), μοῖρα part, death; this group is probably cognate with classical Latin merēre to obtain for one's share (see merit n.), and perhaps with Hittite mark- divide. Compare French méro-, German mero-.Formations in English and French are found from the early 19th cent., and in German apparently from the mid 19th cent. Compare the isolated 17th-cent. formation merocracy n. A small number of formations in Latin, French, and English also occur in meri- (see mericarp n., merispore n., meristele n., merithal n., merithallus n.), probably irregularly < ancient Greek μερίς part ( < μέρος + -ις -id suffix2), although the stem of this word in Greek is μεριδ-.
Forming scientific and technical words with the sense ‘part’ or ‘partial’ (sometimes opposed to holo- comb. form).In Crystallography denoting that a crystal or crystalline form lacks the number of faces required to build up the geometrically complete form belonging to its system; see merohedral adj., merosymmetrical adj., etc.
