Origin: A borrowing from Spanish. Etymon: Spanish mero.
Etymology: < Spanish mero (first attested 1611, although compare quot. 1585), of unknown origin.In form merou (see quot. 1953) after French mérou (1808; 1752 as mero; < Spanish).
Any of various large serranid fishes found in warm seas. Now esp.: a dusky grouper, Epinephelus guaza, of the Mediterranean and eastern Atlantic, or the red grouper, E. morio, of the mid-western Atlantic.
