Etymology: < post-classical Latin epicranid-, epicranis (1502 or earlier; < Hellenistic Greek ἐπικρανίδ- , ἐπικρανίς membrane of the brain < ancient Greek ἐπι- epi- prefix + κρανίον cranium n. + -ίς -id suffix²) + -al suffix¹. Compare earlier epicranium n., and also epicranial adj.

Obsolete. rare.

In an account of the beliefs of ancient Greek physiologists: designating the membranous (probably meningeal) covering of the brain or part of the brain (perhaps the cerebellum), thought to be the seat of the soul. Cf. epicranium n. 1.
