Etymology: < French amphigouri (1738), apparently < amphi- amphi- prefix + a second element of unknown origin.It has been suggested that the second element may be either < ancient Greek γῦρος circle (see gyro- comb. form), or < -ηγορία speech (in e.g. ἀλληγορία allegory n., κατηγορία category n.), but both suggestions pose phonological problems.
