Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin brucus.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin brucus, bruchus (Vulgate) < Hellenistic Greek βροῦκος , βροῦχος locust or its wingless larva, of uncertain origin (see below). Compare earlier bruke n.Since antiquity, Hellenistic Greek βροῦκος has been associated with βρύκειν ‘to eat greedily’ (see bruxism n.), but this may represent a folk etymology.
1. A kind of locust or its wingless larva; an insect, grub, or caterpillar which is destructive to crops or other foliage; = bruke n. Obsolete.Chiefly with reference to Biblical use.
