Origin: Apparently a borrowing from Hindi. Etymon: Hindi *daṇḍtāl.

Etymology: Apparently < a Hindi compound *daṇḍtāl (although this is apparently not recorded in written sources) with elements ultimately < daṇḍa stick, staff, rod (see pedanda n.) and tāla the action of beating time (in music), musical time (see tala n.).English forms with dh- represent the dental pronunciation of the initial d- of the etymon (as opposed to retroflex ḍ).

In the Caribbean, esp. Trinidad: a percussion instrument consisting of a long steel rod which has a blunt or tapered tip and a looped end which rests on the ground or other surface, and which is played by striking the rod with a metal beater shaped like a horseshoe.The instrument originated in India and is now used chiefly in Indo-Caribbean music such as chutney (chutney n. Additions).
