Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Allagit.

Etymology: < German Allagit (1819 or earlier) < ancient Greek ἀλλαγή change, alteration ( < ἄλλος other (see allo- comb. form); the guttural suffix is unexplained) + German -it -ite suffix¹, with alteration of the ending after words in -ite suffix¹; the mineral was apparently so called on account of its change of appearance on exposure.The name appears attributed to C. F. Jasche by E. F. Germar 1819, in Jrnl. f. Chem. u. Physik 26 112; Jasche, however, seems to have used only the descriptive term Grünmanganerz (e.g. C. F. Jasche Kleine mineral. Schriften (1817) I. 10). N.E.D. (1884) gives the pronunciation as (æ·lădʒəit) /ˈælədʒaɪt/.

Mineralogy. Now rare.

A green or brownish-red mineral of uncertain identity (perhaps an altered form of rhodonite) consisting of a silicate and carbonate of manganese.
