Origin: Probably of multiple origins. Formed within English, by compounding. Probably also partly a variant or alteration of another lexical item. Etymons: phono- comb. form, -phore comb. form; phonopore n.
Etymology: < phono- comb. form + -phore comb. form. Compare slightly earlier phonophoric adj. In sense 1 probably alteration of phonopore n., by association with -phore comb. form. With sense 2 compare earlier phonogram n., phonograph n.Compare earlier occurrence of the Latinate form phonophorus denoting any of the auditory ossicles (malleus, incus, or stapes), which transmit sound through the middle ear:1882 E. Coues in Amer. Jrnl. Otol. 4 19 Other of the bones..belong to the mandibular and hyoidean elements being..devoted to the service of the organ of hearing as phonophori, or sound-bearers, the so-called ossicula auditûs.
