Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: phono- comb. form, -metry comb. form.
Etymology: < phono- comb. form + -metry comb. form, after German Phonometrie (E. Zwirner & K. Zwirner Grundfragen der Phonometrie (1936)). Compare French phonométrie art of measuring loudness (1842).
A method of investigating language by the statistical analysis of instrumentally measured speech sounds and informants' responses to the same data.
