Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Partly formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: Latin delegator ; delegate v., -or suffix.
Etymology: Partly < post-classical Latin delegator person who delegates or assigns (6th cent.; < classical Latin dēlēgāt- , past participial stem of dēlēgāre delegate v. + -or -or suffix), and partly (in sense 2) < delegate v. + -or suffix.With sense 2, which is apparently not paralleled in Latin, compare delegant n. 2, delegatee n. 2, and also Middle French delegateur (late 15th cent.).
