Etymology: Probably < Dutch (now regional) al eer formerly < al all adv. + eer ere adv.¹; compare West Frisian alear (Old Frisian alēr). N.E.D. (1884), aware of the existence only of quot. 1581², interpreted the word as an adjective and assigned it the tentative definition ‘fated’, ‘chance-directed’ ( < post-classical Latin alearis of or relating to a game of chance (5th cent.) < classical Latin ālea die, dice (see aleatory adj.) + -āris -ar suffix¹).

Obsolete. rare.
