单词 ctenophora
释义

Ctenophoran.

Brit. /tiːˈnɒf(ə)rə/, /tɛˈnɒf(ə)rə/, U.S. /tɛˈnɑf(ə)rə/
Inflections: Plural Ctenophorae, unchanged.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Ctenophora.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Ctenophora (1835 or earlier), alteration (see -a -a suffix2) of Ctenophorae , order name ( J. F. Eschscholtz System der Acalephen (1829) 20), use as noun of feminine plural of ctenophorus (1796 as specific epithet) < cteno- cteno- comb. form + -phorus -phore comb. form.Ctenophora is normally a plural form, but it is occasionally reinterpreted as a singular (by association with the Latin feminine singular ending -a) with plural Ctenophorae.
Zoology.
Usually with plural agreement: a small phylum of pelagic marine invertebrates that comprises the comb jellies, which resemble cnidarians in having transparent jelly-like bodies and stinging tentacles, but possess eight ciliary comb rows used for swimming. Also: animals of this phylum (collectively or individually); ctenophores, comb jellies.Originally erected as an order of Acalepha, the Ctenophora were long regarded as a class or subphylum of coelenterates. When it was realized that their similarity to cnidarians was only superficial they were raised to phylum level.
