Nazi adj. 1.The National Socialist German Workers' Party, or Nazi Party, was formed in Munich after the First World War (1914–18). Under its leader, Adolf Hitler, it advocated right-wing authoritarian nationalist government, and developed a racist ideology based on anti-Semitism and a belief in the superiority of ‘Aryan’ Germans (see Aryan adj. 2). Hitler was elected German Chancellor in 1933 and established the totalitarian Third Reich. His expansionist foreign policy precipitated the Second World War (1939–45), while his doctrine of racial purity led to a programme of mass imprisonment and killing. During the war, the Nazis murdered more than 6 million European Jews, as well as members of other persecuted groups such as Romani, gay people, and disabled people (see holocaust n. 2d). The Nazi Party was formally abolished in 1945 following the defeat of Germany and its allies.
