单词 national socialist
释义

National Socialistadj.n.

Brit. /ˌnaʃn̩(ə)l ˈsəʊʃəlɪst/, /ˌnaʃən(ə)l ˈsəʊʃəlɪst/, U.S. /ˌnæʃən(ə)l ˈsoʊʃələst/, /ˌnæʃn(ə)l ˈsoʊʃələst/
Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: national adj., socialist n.
Etymology: < national adj. + socialist n. (compare socialist adj.), after German nationalsozial (1881 in E. Dühring designating racist nationalist ideology, 1896 in der Nationalsoziale Verein the National Social Union: compare sense A. 1) and nationalsozialistisch (1896 as national-sozialistisch designating the National Social Union (compare sense A. 1); 1920 in die Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei the National Socialist German Workers' Party (compare sense A. 2)). With use as noun, compare German Nationalsozialist (1887 in general sense ‘popular national leader’; 1930 or earlier denoting a member of the National Socialist German Workers' Party). Compare French national-socialiste (1923 as noun; 1928 as adjective), Italian nazionalsocialista, adjective (1932).The National Social Union referred to at sense A. 1 was unrelated to the later National Socialist German Workers' Party.
Now historical.

2. Of, relating to, or designating the National Socialist German Workers' Party (led by Adolf Hitler from 1920). Cf. Nazi adj. 1.The National Socialist German Workers' Party, or Nazi Party, was formed in Munich after the First World War (1914–18). Under its leader, Adolf Hitler, it advocated right-wing authoritarian nationalist government, and developed a racist ideology based on anti-Semitism and a belief in the superiority of ‘Aryan’ Germans (see Aryan adj. 2). Hitler was elected German Chancellor in 1933 and established the totalitarian Third Reich. His expansionist foreign policy precipitated the Second World War (1939–45), while his doctrine of racial purity led to a programme of mass imprisonment and killing. During the war, the Nazis murdered more than 6 million European Jews, as well as members of other persecuted groups such as Romani, gay people, and disabled people (see holocaust n. 2d). The Nazi Party was formally abolished in 1945 following the defeat of Germany and its allies.
