Origin: Probably a borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin abysmus.
Etymology: Probably < post-classical Latin abysmus (1611 (in P. Matthieu Historiopolitographia II.) or earlier); the Latin form is perhaps < Spanish abismo or Portuguese abismo (see abysm n.), or perhaps shows an alteration of classical Latin abyssus abyss n. after French abîme , †abysme or one of its cognates (see abysm n.).
