Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: rhamnus n., -in suffix1.
Etymology: < rhamnus n. + -in suffix1, after French rhamnine (Fleury 1841, in Jrnl. de pharm. 27 667; c1820 denoting a crimson colouring matter obtained from buckthorn berries).
Chemistry. Now rare.
A yellow colouring matter obtained from the berries of common or purging buckthorn, Rhamnus cathartica, containing flavonoid glycosides; (also) = rhamnetin n. Cf. rhamnegin n., xanthorhamnin n. at xantho- comb. form 1a(a).

1843 Ann. Chym. & Pharmacy 1 405 Rhamnine occurs in the juice and marrow of the berries of buckthorn, from which it separates either immediately on expression, or after a certain time.
1894 Bot. Gaz. 19 70 Rhamnase. In seeds of Rhamnus infectorius, it decomposes the glucoside xanthorhamnin into rhamnin and sugar.
1931 E. C. Miller Plant Physiol. xi. 632 Xanthorhamnin which is found in the seeds of Rhamnus infectorius (Persian berry) is hydrolyzed into rhamnin and glucose by an enzyme.
1977 W. H. Lewis & M. P. F. Elvin-Lewis Med. Bot. 284/2 Rhamnus catharticus... Purgative berries contain rhamnin and rhamnetin; now largely replaced by cascara.
