Etymology: < French rhamnégine (J. Lefort 1866, in Comptes rendus hebd. de l'Acad. des Sci. 63 841), apparently < scientific Latin Rhamnus rhamnus n. + French -ine -ine suffix⁵ (compare -in suffix¹), with -ég- perhaps after French barégine (see barégin n. at barége n. Derivatives). Compare rhamnin n.

Chemistry. Now rare.

A yellow colouring matter obtained from the berries of a buckthorn, Rhamnus saxatilis; = xanthorhamnin n. at xantho- comb. form 1a(a).Rhamnegin is a flavonoid glycoside consisting of rhamnetin bonded to a trisaccharide sugar. Formula: C₃₄H₄₂O₂₀.
