Etymology: < Hebrew qorbān, ‘offering’ ( < qārab to approach, draw near), in New Testament Greek κορβᾶν , in Vulgate corban , whence in English New Testament versions. In sense 2 it represents Latin corbana, Greek κορβανᾶς (Josephus and the New Testament) perhaps representing an Aramaic, Syriac qorbanā, Syriac.
