单词 albigenses
释义

Albigensesn.

Brit. /ˌalbᵻˈdʒɛnsiːz/, /ˌalbᵻˈɡɛnsiːz/, U.S. /ˌælbəˈdʒɛnsiz/, /ˌælbəˈɡɛnsiz/
Forms: late Middle English Abbigenses (transmission error), late Middle English Albygensis, late Middle English– Albigenses.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin Albigenses, Albigensis.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin Albigenses, plural of Albigensis Albigensian heretic (13th cent.), earlier denoting an inhabitant of Albiga (5th cent.) < Albiga , name of Albi, a city in south-west France (5th cent.) + classical Latin -ēnsis (see -ese suffix).
Church History.
The members of a movement formerly active in southern France, which believed in a theology of dualism with an extremely strict moral and social code. Occasionally in singular Albigensis. Cf. Catharist n.This movement was apparently introduced from the Byzantine Empire in the 11th cent., becoming widespread in Italy, the Rhineland and France. In southern France, they became referred to as Albigenses in reference to Albi, one of their major centres, in the course of their violent suppression during the Albigensian Crusade. Their doctrine was condemned as heretical by the Lateran Council of 1215, and by the mid 13th cent. they had been largely eliminated by ecclesiastical inquisitions.
