Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French mer de glace.
Etymology: < French mer de glace, lit. ‘sea of ice’ (1791; 1786 as mer des glaces ) < mer sea (see mere n.1) + de de prep. + glace ice (see glace n.1).
A glacier or frozen sea; spec. (in form Mer de Glace) the great glacier on the north-west slope of Mont Blanc, near Chamonix, in the French Alps.In quot. 1928 apparently used for ‘ice age’.
