Also: a similar rank in the Royal Marines. Abbreviation CSgt., C/Sgt.The rank was created in 1813 by George IV, then Prince Regent, as a recognition of the service of non-commissioned officers in the Peninsular War (1808–14). It was replaced by company quartermaster sergeant in 1914, although it continued to be used as an appointment in some regiments, and was officially reintroduced in 1947.
