Etymology: < medieval Latin collȳridiānus, < collȳrida = collȳris = Greek κολλῡρίς, κολλῡρίδα (Vulgate and Septuagint) cake, diminutive of κολλύρα roll of coarse bread.
A. n.
A member of a sect of heretics in the 4th and 5th centuries who worshipped the Virgin Mary, to whom their women are said to have offered cakes as ‘Queen of Heaven’ (cf. Jeremiah vii. 18).
