Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French cinsault.
Etymology: < French cinsault, cinsaut (not dated in dictionaries of French; also as cinq-saou (also with capital initial(s), and as two words)), the name of a variety of grape and of the wine produced from it, probably < Occitan cinsau (1879–86), further etymology unknown. Compare Spanish Cinsaut (1893 or earlier).
A variety of red wine grape grown in southern France, northern Africa, and South Africa; the simple, fruity rosé or red wine made from this grape.Often a component in a blended wine.
