Origin: A borrowing from Japanese. Etymon: Japanese Oranda.

Etymology: < Japanese Oranda, short for Oranda-shishi-gashira , literally ‘Dutch lion-head’, a variety of this breed of goldfish (see quot. 2002) < Oranda Holland, Dutch ( < Portuguese Olanda or Spanish Holanda ) + shishi-gashira lion-head ( < shishi (stylized representation of a) lion (compare shishi n.) + -gashira, combining form of kashira head).No obvious reason has so far been found for the designation Dutch, except possibly in suggesting something foreign or exotic; at the time the breed was developed, in the mid 19th cent., the Netherlands was the only country other than China with which trade was permitted by the Shogunate. The fish was perhaps introduced to Japan from a Dutch territory (perhaps Batavia) via the Dutch trading station at Dejima in Nagasaki.2002 www.bristol-aquarists.org.uk 2 May (O.E.D. Archive) In the Far East, fish with the raspberry-like growth covering the entire head are known as tigerheads, whilst the name oranda is reserved for fish with a prominent growth on the top of the head (cranial region) only.
