Faraday Soc. 50 942 By burning cordite charges in small vented vessels an investigation has been made of chuffing (sporadic burning with the pressure falling to atmospheric between peaks) and of the continuous but oscillatory burning into which chuffing transforms when the nozzle size is reduced. Over a wide range of chuffing frequency..the surface recession of the propellant associated with a single chuff varies by only a small amount.
