单词 primogenious
释义

primogeniousadj.

Brit. /ˌprʌɪmə(ʊ)ˈdʒiːnɪəs/, U.S. /ˌpraɪmoʊˈdʒinjəs/, /ˌpraɪmoʊˈdʒiniəs/
Forms: 1600s–1700s 1900s– primogeneous, 1600s–1700s 1900s– primogenious.
Origin: Probably either (i) a borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Or perhaps (ii) a variant or alteration of another lexical item. Etymons: Latin prīmogenius , prīmigenius , -ous suffix; primigenious adj.
Etymology: Probably < classical Latin prīmogenius, variant (after classical Latin prīmō first, originally) of prīmigenius (see primigenious adj.) + -ous suffix, or perhaps variant of primigenious adj., altered probably after primogeniture n. and related words. N.E.D. (1908) treats this and similar forms in primo- as erroneous. With the form primogeneous compare -eous suffix.
rare in later use.
