Etymology: < post-classical Latin primogenitalis of or relating to a firstborn (late 2nd or early 3rd cent. in Tertullian; also primogenitalia (use of neuter plural as noun) rights of primogeniture (Vetus Latina)) < primogenitus primogenit n. + classical Latin -ālis -al suffix1.
