Origin: A borrowing from Persian. Etymon: Persian Afġān.
Etymology: < Persian Afġān (10th cent.) inhabitant of the Hindu Kush, Pashtun, the Pashto language, (now also more generally) native or inhabitant of Afghanistan, earlier in Bactrian as αβαγανο (5th cent.), of unknown origin. Compare Sanskrit avagāṇa (6th cent.). With use as adjective compare Persian afġānī Afghani adj.In form Augan after French Augan (1671 or earlier; now Afghan), apparently ultimately after a Persian variant pronunciation (perhaps originally regional).
