Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin tūberculum.
Etymology: < classical Latin tūberculum tubercle n., with omission of the ending (compare -cule suffix). Compare Middle French, French tubercule (1541 in uncertain sense, 1575 in Paré in sense ‘small rounded projection or protuberance on a body part’, 1703 in a botanical context, 1740 in sense ‘abnormal nodule’), Spanish tubérculo (1606), Italian tubercolo (1544 in sense ‘abnormal nodule’, 1598 in sense ‘excrescence’).
