Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly formed within English, by derivation. Partly a borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Partly a borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: character n., -ical suffix; Greek χαρακτηρικός , -al suffix1; Latin charactericus , -al suffix1.
Etymology: Partly (i) < character n. + -ical suffix, partly (ii) < Hellenistic Greek χαρακτηρικός characteric adj. + -al suffix1, and partly (iii) < post-classical Latin charactericus characteristic, distinctive (1507 or earlier; < classical Latin charactēr character n. + -icus -ic suffix) + -al suffix1. Compare later characteric adj.In sense 5 after post-classical Latin characteristicus characteristic adj. (1648 in this sense, in the passage translated in quot. 1664, or earlier).
1. In the shorthand system devised by Timothy Bright: designating any of a set of words which can be written as single characters or symbols. Cf. charactery n. 1. rare (now historical).
