Forms: 1500s cardynalyte, 1500s cardynalyties (plural), 1500s–1600s cardinalitie, 1700s– cardinality.
Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly (i) a borrowing from French. Partly (ii) a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: French cardinalité; Latin cardinalitas.
Etymology: Probably < (i) Middle French, French cardinalité dignity of a cardinal (mid 14th cent. as cardinalitet ), and its etymon (ii) post-classical Latin cardinalitas (14th cent. in a British source) < classical Latin cardinālis cardinal n. + -tās (see -ty suffix1; compare -ity suffix).
