Etymology: Partly (i) < Middle French, French cardinalat dignity of a cardinal (1508), partly (ii) < Italian cardinalato office or dignity of a cardinal (1st half of the 14th cent.), rank of a cardinal church (1667 in the text translated in quot. 1669 at sense 2, or earlier), and partly (iii) < their etymon post-classical Latin cardinalatus office of a cardinal (12th cent.; frequently from 13th cent. in British sources), church of a cardinal priest in Rome (12th cent.) < cardinalis member of the Sacred College (see cardinal n.) + classical Latin -ātus -ate suffix1.

Etymology: < cardinal n. + -ate suffix3.The past participle form cardinalited in quot. 1587 probably shows a transmission or typographical error for cardinalated (the Latin text by Polydor Vergil referred to here reads Cardinalem fecti ‘made a cardinal’). For further evidence for currency of the form cardinalate compare the derived noun cardinalating:1611 D. Carleton Let. 7 Sept. in Hist. MSS Comm.: Rep. MSS Earl of Eglinton (1885) 532 in Parl.
