Forms: Middle English– carte, 1500s cart, ( carete), Scottish cairt.
Etymology: < French carte card < Latin carta , charta paper: adopted at two different times; first in Middle English in branch I; secondly, after this had become obsolete (except perhaps in Scots cartes ‘playing-cards’), from modern French in branch II.

Etymology: (Also written quarte n.): < French quarte, < Italian quarta fourth. First introduced in the form quarte; in 18th cent. naturalized as carte; recent writers, using French authorities, show a tendency to revert to quarte.
Fencing.
a. A position in fencing; one of the eight parries and two usual guards of the small-sword. See quot. 1861.
