Etymology: < A n. + team n.Sense 3 arises from figurative extensions of both senses 1 and 2, especially after the title of the U.S. television series The A-Team (see note below).
1. Military. In the U.S. Special Forces: a unit of 12 soldiers trained for a wide range of combat and counter-insurgency operations.The composition of a typical ‘A’ detachment is a captain, a warrant officer, and ten non-commissioned officers, among them possessing advanced skills in five key areas: weapons, engineering and demolitions, operations and intelligence, communications, and medicine.
