bisulphite, n. Chem. Brit. |bʌɪˈsʌlfʌɪt|, U.S. |baɪˈsəlˌfaɪt| Forms: 18– bisulfite, 18– bisulphite [‹ bi- comb. form + sulphite n. Compare French bisulfite (1838).] A compound in which one of the two hydrogen atoms of sulphurous acid, H2SO3, has been replaced by another atom or group (as in sodium bisulphite, NaHSO3, and calcium bisulphite Ca(HSO3)2).
