plumbane Chem. [f. L. plumb-um lead + -ane 2.] †1. Davy's proposed name for chloride of lead, horn-lead. Obs.
1812Sir H. Davy Chem. Philos. 397 One combination only of lead with chlorine is known..called horn lead by the old chemists... The name proposed for it is plumbane. 2. [-ane 2 b.] a. Any of the alkyl compounds of lead or the hypothetical series of saturated lead hydrides (analogous to the alkanes) from which they are formally derived; freq. as a formative element in names of such compounds. b. spec. Lead tetrahydride, PbH4, an extremely unstable gas.
1920Chem. Abstr. XIV. 2182 The mol. wt. indicates that it has the double formula [(C8H9)3Pb]2 so that it might be considered as hexa-p-xylyldiplumbane. 1950N. V. Sidgwick Chem. Elements & Compounds I. 554 Lead hydride, plumbane, presumably PbH4..was prepared by Paneth in 1920. Ibid. 596 The diplumbane formed may change further into lead tetra-aryl and metallic lead. 1964A. Rochow Organometallic Chem. i. 4 The system [of nomenclature] is so useful that it has been extended..even to tin and lead (..(C6H5)2PbCl2, diphenyldichloroplumbane), although the older inorganic names like diphenyllead dichloride still persist to a considerable extent. 1967P. L. Pauson Organometallic Chem. iii. 78 The rather unstable plumbanes have only been obtained by direct reduction of the halides with suitable hydrides. 1971Wiberg & Amberger Hydrides Elements of Main Groups I–IV x. 757 Similar attempts to obtain plumbane, PbH4,..were unsuccessful. Ibid. 760 Trimethylplumbane, Me3PbH, and triethylplumbane, Et3PbH, decompose according to kinetics that are first-order for [R3PbH]. 1973J. J. Lagowski Mod. Inorg. Chem. xi. 368 Plumbane has been prepared in only trace amounts from the reactions which yield the hydrides of the other elements in this family. |
