Orig., any enzyme which brings about oxidation (now called an oxidoreductase); now used only of such enzymes that react with molecular oxygen, esp. those that catalyse the transfer of hydrogen from a substrate to oxygen so as to form water or hydrogen peroxide (cf. oxygenase).
