kraurosis Path.|krɔːˈrəʊsɪs| [mod.L. (A. Breisky 1885, in Zeitschr. f. Heilkunde VI. 75), f. Gr. κραῦρ-ος brittle, dry + -osis.] Atrophy of the skin of the vulva, by some regarded as a distinct disease.
1888Trans. Amer. Dermatol. Assoc. 64 Under the name ‘Kraurosis’ Professor Breisky, in his book on gynaecology, describes a disease of the vulva, which he considers a hitherto unknown form... The same disease has been described, fourteen years ago, by Robert F. Weir, of New York, as ‘Ichthyosis of the Vulva’. 1901C. H. Roberts Outl. Gynæcol. Path. i. 14 In Kraurosis, the tissues of the vulva are smooth and pale, with irritable tender red patches along the margins of the hymen and in the vestibule. 1948W. Schiller in W. A. D. Anderson Path. xl. 1167 Kraurosis rarely follows the artificial menopause produced by operative removal of the ovaries. 1973A. S. Woodcock in Fox & Langley Postgrad. Obstetr. & Gynaecol. Path. iv. 57 Kraurosis and senile atrophy are generally accepted as synonymous. Hence krauˈrotic a., affected with kraurosis.
1894Brit. Med. Jrnl. 7 Apr. Suppl. 63/1 Carcinomatous nodules were detected in the kraurotic tissue. |
