before a vowel phyl-, combining form of Gr. ϕῦλον, ϕυλή a tribe (see phyle, phylum), used in mod. scientific terms, mostly of biology. phyloaˈnalysis Psychol., analysis of an individual that takes account of him as part of a phylum (sense b); hence phyloˈanalyst; phyloanaˈlytic a. ˈphylocycle, the cycle or whole course of the development of a phylum; hence phyloˈcyclic a. phylogeˈrontic [gerontic] a., of or pertaining to the old age or stage of decay of a race or type of organisms. phylogeˈrontism, phylogerontic character or condition. phylonepiˈonic a. [Gr. νήπιος infant], of or pertaining to the nepionic stage of phylogenesis, or that following the embryonic (cf. phylembryonic). phyˈlopterous a. [Gr. πτερόν wing], of or pertaining to the Phyloptera, in some classifications a superorder of insects, containing the Neuroptera, Pseudoneuroptera, Orthoptera, and Dermaptera.
