ixora|ɪkˈsɔərə| [mod.L. (Linnæus in J. Burmann Thesaurus Zeylanicus (1737) 125), ad. Iswara, name of a Hindu divinity, = Skr. īšvará lord, master: so named because the flowers of some species are used as votive offerings.] An evergreen shrub or small tree of the genus so called, mostly native to tropical Africa and Asia and bearing clusters of white or brightly-coloured flowers.
